“Unity 101” with Rev. Bill Worth

Four Mondays: August 10-31 ? Love Offering

This class is for those who want to know more about Unity’s basic principles. Text: “Keys to the Kingdom” (available free in the Bookstore for those taking the class). “Metaphysics I, Part B” with Rev. Bill Worth
Wednesdays, June 17-July 15

This course is a follow-up to Metaphysics I, Part A, completed on June 10. It is recommended that students complete Part A before taking Part B.

Metaphysics I, Part B covers Chapters 10-18 of the Metaphysics I book, dealing with subjects such as the ego, Unity’s ideas about the mind and consciousness, the spiritual and physical universes, Divine paradox, and the Trinity. “Metaphysics” means “beyond the physical,” and Unity teaches us to look beyond the 5-sense world to uncover spiritual principles. Explore the world of Unity metaphysics in this interactive class. Book used: Metaphysics I, Chapters 10-18 (in Bookstore).

Powerful Processes

with Honey Judith Rubin

Each week there will be a different stand-alone theme or focus for the usual Partners in Prayer time slot. This new blend of Honey's insights and wisdom from Unity Principles, ACIM and the Law of Attraction/Abraham-Hicks work will help you enhance your skill with the tools of powerful, deliberate creation. Attend the sessions that feel right for you. Come be uplifted by Honey’s wit and the depth of her clarity.

June 21: The Power of Appreciation — How gratitude and feeling good help you move up the emotional scale so all your dreams can come true. (A variety of tools for moving energy.)

June 28: The Power of Forgiveness — How true forgiveness heals the past and releases the future so you are fully present in the power of each fresh new now. (Finding release from any belief that others can determine your destiny or the quality of your life experience)

July 5: The Power of Visioning — How scripting, vision boards, the Creation Can (God Can) and inner rehearsals help you "win the part". (Explore new ways of looking at familiar tools to script your life, right down to the right and perfect supporting players.)

July 12: The Power of Pivoting, Placemats and Segment Intending— How to change your direction and choose the course of your life. (Powerful leveraging tools that can help you feel fully supported in your choices and decisions.)

July 19: The Power of Integrity — How being fully present with and for God allows you to have the life you have desired. (Why greater and greater integrity can and must be present in every act, decision and area of life.)

July 26: The Power of Prayer — How this simple tool can help you leverage your intent and desire in each moment. (What prayer really is, and how to use this most powerful tool for creating the sweet fullness of life that you desire.)

Ancient-Future Emerging Jesus

This four week class provides an introduction into the changing understanding of the early church and its writings about Jesus, particularly the Gospel of Thomas, but also explores some ancient spiritual practices and post-modern voices that are shaping what is being called “The Emergent or Progressive Emergent Church”.

The Instructor:  Rev. Gregg Carlson is a graduate of Colgate University and Northern Seminary.  He has more than 24 years of ministry experience in a variety of settings.  He has studied with one of the leading experts in the Ancient-Future movement, Dr. Robert Webber, and has been part of the Emergent Conversation for more than 4 years.  He is an ordained minister in the Free Methodist Church, but presently holds “Privilege of Call” with the Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ.  He currently serves as Director of Operations at Unity North Atlanta Church and is also a church planter coach with the New Church Development Team of the UCC. 

 

Primary texts:  “The Message Bible” and “Beyond Belief” by Elaine Pagels (these are both available in the Unity North Bookstore), passages from the Message Bible are also available online at www.BibleGateway.orgThere will also be some printed materials handed out by the instructor that will be an additional cost.

 

Course costs:  There is no fixed charge for the course, a love offering will be received each week and you are urged to participate as you are able.

 

Syllabus:

Class is scheduled to run from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Wednesday evenings in the Holy Grounds Café of Unity North Church, please try to be present on time. Please read the week’s reading assignment prior to attending class:

Pre-class assignment: In one page write out your observations and beliefs about Jesus, Christianity, the New Testament and the early church.

Week #1 -Wednesday, July 22:

Reading Assignments to be completed before class:  Chapters 1 & 2 of Beyond Belief, Chapter 1 of the Book of John in the Message Bible

Topic: Introduction to a new understanding of the early church, Dead Sea Scrolls, Nag Hammadi Library (particularly the Gospel of Thomas).  How these are changing our understanding about the early followers of Jesus? 

Meditation practice:  The Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic

Emerging resource:  “Dust” by Rob Bell

 

Week #2 – Wednesday, July 29:

Topic: John versus Thomas, belief versus mystic journey, Elaine Pagels theory on the early battle for the faith

Reading Assignment to be completed before class:  Chapter 3 of Beyond Belief, The Gospel of Thomas (p. 227 in Beyond Belief), John chapter 21 (Message Bible) and hand-out on Centering Prayer from “The Sacred Way”, by Tony Jones.

Meditation practice:  Centering Prayer

Emerging resource:  “Breathe” by Rob Bell

Week #3 – Wednesday, August 5:

Topic: The battle for the Canon, what and who shaped the New Testament of the Bible?  Do we not read the books left out?  What would it look like if we were shaping a Canon or list of books for the New Testament today?

Reading Assignment to be completed before class: Chapter 4 of Beyond Belief, Hand-out “Silence and Solitude” from “The Sacred Way”, by Tony Jones, hand-out “The Eight Points of the Center for Progressive Christianity”

Meditation practice: Taize chorus to lead us into and out of Silence

Emerging Resource: The 8 points of The Center for Progressive Christianity

Week #4 – Wednesday, August 12:

Topic: The Battle for a Catholic (universal, one) Church, why so much bloodshed?  Who decides who is a heretic?  Is the emerging church a new vision for Christianity?  What does that mean for the Unity Movement?

Reading Assignment to be completed before class: Chapter 5 of Beyond Belief, Hand-out “The Didache” (the earliest Christian document we have),

Meditation practice: Celebration of the ancient Thanksgiving

Yoga Classes

Tuesday mornings in the lower level of the Administration building. These sessions include a warm-up, slow stretches, guided relaxation, purposeful breathing and meditation. A deep sense of inner peace and the ability to focus one's thoughts naturally grow with the practice of Hatha yoga, as does increased flexibility and strength. Bring a blanket and/or yoga mat and pillow and dress comfortably.
($10 per class)

A COURSE IN MIRACLES
Sunday Morning Classes

The 'Miracles' study group invites people who want to study "A COURSE IN MIRACLES" to a friendly, open, ongoing class on Sunday mornings from 9:15am to 10:45am in the upper level of the Admin. building (Y.O.U. room). This informal class consists of prayer, text reading, discussion, an ACIM daily lesson and mutual support in beginning to learn to lay aside fear in our daily lives and accept the love, peace and joy which are naturally ours.
