Volunteer Opportunity at CFVC
Posted on Apr 15 , 2013 in Featured Ministries & Ministries & Outreach & Shelter Outreach
Last year Unity North was blessed with an opportunity to provide lawn maintenance for the Cherokee Family Violence Center emergency shelter near downtown Canton. We would like to continue this support and ask that you consider sharing some of your time and energy to assist in meeting this goal.
Generally it takes about two and a half hours when working alone to get/keep the yard in good shape. We supply our own equipment for each visit including, lawn mower, weed eater, edger, shrub trimmer and rake (as needed). CFVC has a mower in the shed, but it was not operational as of last fall. (You all are welcome to try to get it working if you have the time.) Generally volunteers choose a day/time that is most convenient for them to go out there during a given service week (but preferably Wed-Sat) as long as I know in advance and can notify the shelter so they know when to expect volunteers on the site. We would like to get started sooner this year and provide regular maintenance so the task is a bit more reasonable overall for everyone.
Please review the schedule linked below and signup for a service date as you feel led. To sign up please contact Angela Speeth at 678-459-7392 or apspeeth@gmail.com. Feel free to pass this information along to others who may be willing to assist. Thank you in advance for your time, energy and action.

One arm of our Outreach Ministry at Unity North is creating and serving dinner once a month for The Extension. This is a very real and tangible way to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
We are currently looking for teams for November through April to serve on the third Thursday of the month for approximately 20 women. It can be a one time opportunity or an on-going one for you to put together a small group of friends and join us in our efforts. Your service and love makes a huge difference.
Please contact Kurt Heim right away at 770-928-4076 or at heim.kurt@gmail.com to help out.

At Unity North sharing our love and spirit beyond our walls is so very important so we have an outreach team that is devoted to serving the greater community. Here are some of the ways you can join us in our mission of service.
“The Extension”
Every third Thursday evening we prepare and serve dinner for the women’s program. Team lead: Kurt Heim.
“Common Grounds”
Every third Wednesday we prepare lunch and a program for the community of men and women dealing with AIDS. Team leads: Nina Vance and Marguerite Rooney.
Shelter Outreach
Cobb County – In June we will be collecting bedding, pillows, bath towels, wachcloths, hair brushes, body lotion, bath robes and combs. Team lead: Dana Smith
Cherokee County – We have adopted two rooms that we are responsible for keeping fresh, painted and supplied. We also help move furniture as needed. Team lead: Angela Speeth
UNA Hospice Team
We are establishing an entire ministry of trained hospice workers devoted to helping those who are in the process of leaving the physical realm for a new spiritual adventure. Team lead: Lin Tatum
Habitat for Humanity
For Summer and Fall of 2012 Unity North is involved in an Interfaith Habitat for Humanity build. We are excited to join the Interfaith community for a common goal of helping out a family in need. Team Lead: David Cameron
MUST Ministries
Every Sunday we have a barrel to collect food for those in our community who are in need. Please bring non-perishable food items and help share your abundance. Check the printed bulletin on Sundays to see which specific food items are being collected for the month.
Blood Drive
Three times a year we do a blood drive for the Red Cross. Our next blood drive is scheduled for October 28.
If you would like to help out in any of these areas of service please contact Rev. Richard and we’ll get you plugged in.

Unity North Atlanta Care Angels
Unity North Atlanta Care Angels’ mission is to supplement the pastors and staff by providing emergency care in the form of meals, childcare and transportation. As we serve, we uphold our Unity principles with unconditional love and acceptance, and through this service, we transform ourselves, our care receivers, and our world.
Each Care Angel Team Requires:
Meal Prep and Delivery: Food Angels will prepare one meal, usually a dinner, and deliver to the care receiver’s home or to the church for transport. Guidelines about food allergies or preferences will be provided. Volunteers will be sorted by zip code so they will not have to travel far to bring food.
Childcare: Cherub Angels will need a background check before providing care. If you need a background check, the fee is $10. Care may be needed in the care receiver’s home or arrangements can be made in your own home. This is perfect for mothers with small children, teachers and grandmothers. Time will vary based on the care receiver’s need. Volunteers will be sorted by zip code so they will not have to travel far to care for a child.
Transportation: Angels on Wheels should have a reliable car that can hold luggage or a wheelchair. Trips will be to/from the hospital for surgery or to/from the airport in the case of family members arriving for a memorial service. Gas cannot be reimbursed, but mileage is tax deductible.
With just a few phone calls, each team can fulfill pastoral care needs without becoming a burden on each volunteer!
If you would like to become a Unity North Care Angel, please contact Jennie Scott at 770-315-2761 or e-mail Jennie.
